HEADACHES & MIGRAINES
Headaches are one of the most common health complaints — but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. Whether it’s a dull, persistent ache or a debilitating migraine, recurring headaches can have a major impact on your daily life, work, and emotional wellbeing. At Holly Cottage Chiropractic Clinic, we take a holistic approach to identifying and addressing the mechanical causes of certain types of headaches, helping you find relief and regain control.
How Common Are Headaches?
Headaches affect millions of people in the UK every year. According to the NHS and The Migraine Trust, it’s estimated that up to 10 million people in the UK experience regular headaches, with 1 in 7 people living with migraines — making it one of the most disabling and disruptive health conditions in the population. Tension-type headaches are the most common, often caused or aggravated by stress, poor posture, and muscular tension in the neck and shoulders. Migraines, though more complex, can also be linked to musculoskeletal imbalances, particularly around the upper spine.
Many people with recurring headaches try various over-the-counter medications or simply learn to “live with it.” However, identifying and addressing the underlying triggers — such as joint stiffness, muscular tension, and poor posture — can significantly reduce both the frequency and intensity of headaches. That’s where chiropractic care can help.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help?
Chiropractic care is ideally placed to help manage certain types of headaches, especially those that are mechanical in nature — such as cervicogenic headaches (originating from the neck) and tension-type headaches. By carefully assessing your spinal movement, muscle function, and posture, chiropractors can identify restrictions or imbalances that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Treatment often includes gentle spinal adjustments, mobilisation of the neck and upper back, soft tissue techniques, postural advice, and stress management strategies. While not all headaches and migraines are fully curable — especially those triggered by hormonal or neurological causes — many patients experience significant improvement in both severity and frequency with chiropractic care.
At Holly Cottage, we focus on long-term management, not just short-term relief. Our goal is to reduce your discomfort, improve your quality of life, and help you understand how to prevent headaches from dominating your day-to-day activities.
TYPES OF HEADACHES
Not all headaches are the same — and identifying the type is key to providing the most effective care. At Holly Cottage Chiropractic Clinic, we carefully assess the nature and cause of your symptoms to determine whether chiropractic care may help or if onward referral is needed. Here are some of the most common headache types we see in clinic.

Cervicogenic Headaches
Cervicogenic headaches originate from dysfunction in the neck — often due to restricted spinal joints, poor posture, or muscular tension. Pain is usually one-sided and may start at the base of the skull before radiating to the forehead, temple, or behind the eye. Movements of the neck can often trigger or worsen the pain. Chiropractic care is particularly effective for cervicogenic headaches, using manual therapy, postural correction, and targeted exercises to address the root mechanical cause.

MIGRAINE HEADACHES
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction — involving the jaw joint — can cause referred pain into the head, neck, face, and temples. This type of headache may be linked to teeth grinding, jaw clenching, or poor bite alignment. Chiropractors can help by relieving surrounding muscular tension, improving joint function in the jaw and neck, and offering exercises or advice to reduce strain.

RED FLAG HEADACHES
While most headaches are benign, certain symptoms may indicate something more serious. “Red flag” signs include sudden-onset severe headache, neurological symptoms (such as slurred speech or visual loss), headache following trauma, or a significant change in pattern or intensity.
At Holly Cottage, your safety is our priority. If we identify any red flags during your assessment, we can refer you promptly for further investigation — including imaging such as MRI or a consultation with a neurologist, either through the NHS or private providers.
